PAWS Introduction & History

 Today, animal welfare in Thane district has reached to a degree where people have started looking up to NGOs for helping an injured animal. All thanks to the Plants & Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) who acted as the guardians of animals and made this day possible where one phone call to the PAWS helpline number takes care of all your problems. The situation was not the same when PAWS started as a young NGO giving first aid to injured animals on the streets. At then PAWS did not have an ambulance, but few dedicated members took on their bikes and the first aid box to avail help for the injured animals on the streets. Time passed by and today PAWS boasts of having a couple of full-fledged ambulances serving to the needs of helpless animals. It’s no longer the same old PAWS. It has evolved to a degree where one can clearly say it has been a revolution, a certain youth movement where volunteers kept joining in the service of animals and the total number has surpassed beyond 200 and it’s increasing every single day.

PAWS – a young NGO that was always determined to stand on its feet inspite of all the hard times. That’s the history of PAWS.

 

Both the ambulances cover the entire roadmap of  Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath and Badlapur.

Modern and sophisticated equipments like Graspers & Grabbers, first-aid kits, medicines and imported 2 pet carriers are always loaded in the ambulance.

In addition to all this, the NGO has also added up snake and bird rescue accessories to attend maximum cases pertaining to aves and reptile rescue.

 

PAWS – Fast Facts and Achievements

• Successfully provided medical aid or treatment to more than 8000 animals till date
• Ambulance service covers 5 suburban towns and 2 districts with an average of 600 animals rescue cases per year
• Initiated awareness programs across 45 educational institutes, number of NGOs and corporate houses
• Bagged the “Outstanding Service to Society” award from Karmayog.com website in the year 2005
• Featured in the Limca Book of Records for having the “Youngest Animal Rehabilitation Team” in the year 2005
• Conducted close to 100 social cause and charity programs with the involvement of youth
• The President of PAWS received the ‘Sarpamitra’ title giving them the recognition and right to rescue reptiles – from the Forest Department
• PAWS volunteer Sonali Bagde and the President of PAWS – Nilesh Bhanage received ‘Certificate of Recognition’ from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk
• Initiates monthly fund-raising and merchandise sales on a regular basis to give the much-needed financial aid for smooth functioning of the NGO
• PAWS received an ‘Environment Protection Award – 2009’ from Sushil Kumar Sharma Foundation, Gwaliar
• Affiliated to 7 animal welfare bodies at national and international level
• Received media coverage for more than 30 times for its past and on-going drives – some of the most memorable ones include MTV Youngistan, NDTV Good Times and IBN Lokmat
• Recently opened a new helpline number for snake and reptile rescue.
• Carried out cattle health check up camps and vaccination drives.
